It Happened in Newark

Oh, those wacky Newarkers. In 1916, the townsfolk cut loose for their 350th anniversary—a yearlong celebration that included parties, parades, statue unveilings and fireworks. For those who enjoyed playing dress-up, there were reenactments and costume balls galore. In an era of rapid change and uncertainty, it’s no wonder these otherwise-respectable citizens were so willing to cut loose and go a little crazy to mark the city’s milestone birthday. These photos, courtesy of the Newark Public Library, were originally published in the Newark Evening News.
